Telemedicine is a rapidly-growing field encompassing many programs and services which allow for medical consultation to take place through secure, electronic communication including bi-directional video conferencing, telephone and email.
The American Telemedicine Association also includes transmission of still images, e-health including patient portals, remote monitoring of vital signs, continuing medical education and nursing call centers, among other applications, as part of telemedicine.
The terms “telemedicine” and “telehealth” are considered to be interchangeable.
